San Francisco Giants infielder Pablo Sandoval will undergo Tommy John surgery on his right elbow, the team announced Saturday. Sandoval last played on Aug. 9 and went on the 10-day injured list five days later. He was examined on Wednesday by Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles, and the noted orthopedic surgeon recommended the reconstructive surgery in which the ulnar collateral ligament is repaired. The first-place Atlanta Braves have signed catcher Francisco Cervelli and immediately plugged him into the starting lineup against the New York Mets. Cervelli, who has a history of concussions, was recently granted his release by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Cervelli requested his release from Pittsburgh to pursue opportunities with a team that could offer more playing time and a chance to play in the postseason.
