The St. Louis Cardinals have activated third baseman Matt Carpenter from the 10-day injured list ahead of Sunday's series finale against the Oakland Athletics. Carpenter originally went on the IL on July 16 with a contusion after fouling a ball off the top of his right foot against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Cardinals also recalled righthander Ryan Helsley from Triple-A Memphis and optioned first baseman/outfielder Rangel Ravelo to the same club. Continue to Article

Right-hander Mike Fiers ran his unbeaten streak to 16 games, and Chad Pinder broke open a tight contest with a pinch-hit, three-run home run Saturday night, as the Oakland Athletics thumped the visiting St. Louis Cardinals 8-3 in the opener of a two-game interleague series. Mark Canha had a two-run single, while Marcus Semien and Chris Herrmann scored twice apiece for the A's, who won their fifth straight against the Cardinals, including three in a row this season. New York Yankees slugger Edwin Encarnacion was placed on the 10-day injured list because of a fractured right wrist suffered in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against the visiting Boston Red Sox. Although initial X-rays were negative, a CT scan revealed the break, prompting Encarnacion to become the 24th Yankee to hit the injured list this season. Encarnacion, 36, was struck in the wrist by a slider from Boston reliever Josh A. Smith in the eighth inning of New York's 9-2 victory in the first game of a day-night doubleheader.
