The St. Louis Cardinals have activated third baseman Matt Carpenter from the 10-day injured list ahead of Sunday's series finale against the Oakland Athletics. Carpenter originally went on the IL on July 16 with a contusion after fouling a ball off the top of his right foot against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Right-hander Mike Fiers ran his unbeaten streak to 16 games, and Chad Pinder broke open a tight contest with a pinch-hit, three-run home run Saturday night, as the Oakland Athletics thumped the visiting St. Louis Cardinals 8-3 in the opener of a two-game interleague series. Mark Canha had a two-run single, while Marcus Semien and Chris Herrmann scored twice apiece for the A's, who won their fifth straight against the Cardinals, including three in a row this season. A few weeks ago, Nathan Patterson and his brother attended a Colorado Rockies game at Coors Field in Denver, and Nathan stepped into a cage in the stadium concourse to test his pitching skills. Jack Flaherty took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, allowed one hit in seven outstanding innings and combined with two relievers on a one-hitter as the St. Louis Cardinals continued their surge with an 8-0 victory over the visiting Chicago Cubs on Thursday night. The Cardinals won for the 17th time in 25 games and improved to 14-6 since the All-Star break by collecting 14 hits. Matt Chapman hit a go-ahead, two-run home run off Milwaukee Brewers All-Star Josh Hader in the eighth inning, delivering the host Oakland Athletics a 5-3 victory in the interleague game Thursday afternoon. The homer was the A's second of the series off Hader (1-5), after Matt Olson had ended Tuesday's series opener with a walk-off shot in the 10th inning for a 3-2 win.
