NY Mets
The 28-year-old southpaw has had his share of ups and downs this season -- from spending time on the injured list to a nerve issue in his left forearm -- to spending time pitching out of the bullpen. Since he has rejoined the starting rotation though, he may be piquing the interest of teams in need of pitching help. Steven Matz threw the first complete game of his big-league career Saturday night when the New York Mets left-hander tossed a five-hit shutout in a 3-0 victory over the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates. Matz (6-6), who hadn't pitched into the eighth inning since Aug. 14, 2016 and completed eight innings just once in his first 89 big league starts (May 25, 2016), walked none and struck out seven while throwing just 99 pitches, including 67 for strikes. He didn't allow a hit until Melky Cabrera doubled with one out in the fourth. The Pirates mounted their only threat in the sixth, when Jacob Stallings hit a leadoff double and advanced to third on a one-out single by Kevin Newman But Matz then got Cabrera to hit into a 5-4-3 double play. The Pittsburgh Pirates claimed right-hander Parker Markel off waivers from the Seattle Mariners on Saturday and are sending him to Triple-A Indianapolis. Markel, 28, had been designated for assignment by the Mariners on Tuesday. He started the season with Double-A Arkansas before getting promoted to Triple-A Tacoma two weeks into the season. Mets All-Star Jeff McNeil was working the phone Friday, hoping to acquire a promising, four-pawed prospect with the trade deadline looming. McNeil video chatted with his wife, Tatiana, from Citi Field prior to a game against the Pirates, pleading to bring home a puppy brought to the ballpark by the North Shore Animal League. With his spouse uncertain, McNeil clubbed a three-run homer in New York's 6-3 win over Pittsburgh — just the leverage he thinks he needed. Continue to Article
