After missing 2 1/2 weeks with a shoulder issue, Zack Wheeler felt some relief when leadoff hitter Corey Dickerson swung through his 98 mph fastball Friday night. No doubt, the Mets right-hander did his part heating up the hot stove ahead of next week's trade deadline. Zack Wheeler, making perhaps his final start with the Mets, tossed 5 1/3 solid innings in his return from the injured list and earned the win Friday night as New York beat the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates 6-3. The Mets are 8-5 since the All-Star break and need to win one of the final two games against the Pirates to capture their fourth series in five tries since play resumed. Moments before, the New York Mets rookie was presented with a $1 million check –- nearly twice his 2019 salary – for his Home Run Derby victory at Progressive Field in Cleveland. Alonso immediately paid it forward, donating $50,000 to each cause. Alonso pledged the money to both charities well before he toppled Toronto's Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the derby's final round.
