On Tuesday, Washington Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer broke his nose when a ball bounced off his bat and hit him in the face while he was practicing bunting. The team announced that a CT scan came up negative, but surely Scherzer was going to miss at least a start with the face injury, right? Despite having a broken nose and massive black eye, Max Scherzer opted to take the mound against the Phillies Wednesday -- and he pitched a gem. Continue to Article

The game between the Philadelphia Phillies and host Washington Nationals was rained out Monday night. The game was slated to begin at 7:05 p.m. ET and was called at 10 p.m. It will be made up as part of a split doubleheader on Wednesday, with games at 1:05 p.m. and 7:05 p.m. Pitchers have not been announced. Regularly scheduled games are on for Tuesday and Thursday at 7:05 p.m. The Phillies make their third and final trip to Washington in late September. Continue to Article

The Phillies were blown out, 15-1, in a game when they used an opener for the second time this season (see observations). Gabe Kapler told Vince Velasquez late Saturday night that he would get the "start," and the plan was to ride Velasquez for 50 to 60 pitches before turning to lefty Cole Irvin. The Phillies' need for another starting pitcher has not been more glaring than it was Sunday afternoon in a totally embarrassing 15-1 loss to the Braves. With no fifth starter currently on the Phillies' roster, Gabe Kapler went with Vince Velasquez as an opener in Sunday's series finale and it did not work. Velasquez hit Ronald Acuña Jr. on an 0-2 pitch to begin the game, before Dansby Swanson singled and Freddie Freeman hit a two-run double. Continue to Article
