NY Mets
Pete Alonso and the rest of these new-look Mets are playing just how the club had hoped. It's just two games, of course, but 2-0 is better than 0-2 - which is where the Washington Nationals are as they adjust to life without Bryce Harper. Alonso contributed three hits, two RBIs and a pair of nifty stretch plays at first base in Game 2 of his major league career, and fellow youngsters J.D. Davis, Jeff McNeil and Dominic Smith all played a part in lifting the Mets past the Nationals 11-8 on Saturday. Continue to Article

Interrupting a pair of performances befitting the owners of the past three NL Cy Young Awards, Cano went deep against Scherzer in his debut at-bat for the Mets and saved a run with an unusual double play, and New York edged the Bryce Harper-less Washington Nationals 2-0 in the opener for both teams Thursday. While the Nationals' offense clearly missed its former slugger - Harper was up I-95, playing Game 1 of his $330 million contract for the Philadelphia Phillies - Cano showed why the Mets wanted to get him from the Seattle Mariners in a December deal that also landed closer Edwin Diaz, who got the save Thursday. One of the worst-kept secrets over the last week was that Pete Alonso was going to make the Mets' 25-man roster. Still, Alonso had a tough time holding the tears in when manager Mickey Callaway gave him the news. Continue to Article
