Columbus
On Thursday we saw a critical Wild Card game between the Columbus Blue Jackets and Montreal Canadiens.  Last night there was a similarly important version in the Western Conference featuring the Colorado Avalanche and Arizona Coyotes. In that one, the Avalanche earned a 3-2 shootout win against the Coyotes.  Colorado already had the edge in the battle for the final Wild Card spot and now the Avalanche have a three-point lead against Arizona with four games left in each team's schedule.  At least the Coyotes managed to claw their way into overtime with a pair of late third period goals scored by Ekman-Larsson, but the loss still greatly reduced their playoff hopes.  It also hurt Minnesota, which is one point behind Arizona and four points behind Colorado.  The Wild did beat Vegas last night, but being four points back with four games to go makes it extremely unlikely that the Wild will be able to close the gap. The New York Islanders weren't in any serious danger of losing their hold on a playoff spot entering Thursday's game in Winnipeg, and it was always going to be just a matter of when, and not if, they officially clinch a postseason berth. The Islanders scored three goals over the final 13 minutes, including two in the final two minutes, to storm back for a 5-4 win that moved them back into second place in the Metropolitan Division and has them one step closer to returning to the playoffs for the first time since the 2015-16 season. Jordan Eberle was the big hero for the Islanders on Thursday with a pair of third period goals, including the game-winner just 33 seconds after Casey Cizikas had tied the game. Continue to Article

Columbus
Trailing Montreal by two points in the standings, the Columbus Blue Jackets desperately needed a win over the Canadiens to keep their playoff hopes alive. A disappointing start turned into a decisive victory that got them back on the right side of the Eastern Division wild-card line. The Blue Jackets spent the first 10 minutes of the game out of sorts and trying to get a single shot off. Continue to Article

The Blues will look to take the first step toward raising the Stanley Cup for the first time in franchise history when they visit the New York Rangers on Friday night. The Blues haven't played since Monday, when they extended their winning streak to four games by beating the visiting Vegas Golden Knights 3-1. The Rangers were off Thursday after suffering their seventh loss in eight games Wednesday, falling to the host Boston Bruins 6-3. Continue to Article
