Edmonton
With seven games remaining on the schedule and sitting seven points out of a playoff spot, the Edmonton Oilers are in faint-hope territory. While it's possible they can make the playoffs, the Oilers more than likely are destined to miss the Stanley Cup chase for the 12th time in 13 seasons. But until they're officially eliminated, there's always a flicker of hope, and going into their home date with the Western Conference's cellar-dwelling Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday night, the Oilers are flat-out praying for a miracle. Los Angeles
The Los Angeles Kings are in Calgary on Monday night and that means it is time for defenseman Drew Doughty to continue what has become a longstanding feud with Matthew Tkachuk. The 21-year-old Tkachuk has only been in the league for three years but has already earned himself quite the reputation as being one of the NHL's most irritating players to play against, and no one seems to share that opinion more (publicly, anyway) than Doughty. On Monday, he was asked about the “rivalry” that currently exists between the Flames and Kings only to downplay it as nothing more than Tkachuk going after him all the time. Continue to Article

Kovalchuk, meanwhile, has managed just 14 goals and 31 total points in his 60 games and has found himself as a healthy scratch on more than one occasion, and especially recently as the team tries to look toward the future in what has become a lost season. That coaching change earlier in the season, which saw Willie Desjardins take over behind the bench for John Stevens, seems to have been a turning point in Kovalchuk's season, at least based on what he said on Friday when talking about his latest healthy scratch. From the Los Angeles Times: “After Willie came here, I don't have a chance,” Kovalchuk said. Continue to Article

Edmonton
Edmonton Oilers forward Tobias Rieder had the same reaction everyone should have had when he first read the comments from team CEO Bob Nicholson on Thursday, essentially blaming him for the Oilers' struggles this season and missing the playoffs for what will be the second year in a row (and 12th time in the past 13 years). “You look at it and kind of can't believe it,” said Rieder on Friday, just less than 24 hours he was thrown under the bus by the team's CEO. Speaking at an event with season ticket holders, Nicholson did not hold back in his criticism of Rieder, saying that he went to Edmonton as a free agent hoping to play with one of the team's two superstars (Connor McDavid or Leon Draisaitl), score 15 or 16 goals, and turn that performance into a larger contract. In the grand tradition of having celebrities inside the television play-by-play booth, San Diego news icon Ron Burgundy joined Alex Faust and Jim Fox during the second period of Thursday's Los Angeles Kings-San Jose Sharks game. Burgundy offered his expert analysis during LA's 4-2 win, revealing his fondness for Jeff Carter, letting the viewers know he was wearing his lucky underwear, and getting himself on the “Kiss Cam” with a burrito. San Diego's favorite son also made time to meet with Aiden Rose, a Make-a-Wish kid who was signed to a one-day contract by the Kings. Continue to Article
