Washington Capitals defenseman Michal Kempny is out indefinitely after appearing to suffer a lower-body injury in Wednesday's loss against the Tampa Bay Lightning, the team announced Friday. Kempny won't be available to play in Friday night's game against the Minnesota Wild, and his status for the playoffs, which begin April 10, is undetermined. Fourth-liner Ivan Barbashev recorded his first career hat trick as the host St. Louis Blues skated to a 5-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday. St. Louis native Patrick Maroon scored in his career-high fourth consecutive contest, Oskar Sundqvist also tallied and rookie Jordan Binnington finished with 20 saves as the Blues improved to 3-0-1 in their last four games. Victor Hedman scored 3:01 into overtime, and Andrei Vasilevskiy made a franchise-record and career-high 54 saves as the visiting Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Washington Capitals for the second time in five days, 5-4 on Wednesday night. Nikita Kucherov, the NHL leader with 119 points, scored twice during Tampa Bay's four-goal second period.
