Milwaukee
Cain soared above the wall to rob Jose Martinez of a tying home run for the final out, lifting Christian Yelich and the Milwaukee Brewers over the St. Louis Cardinals 5-4 on Thursday. With at least one Cardinals player in the bullpen already raising his arms to celebrate, Cain pulled back the pinch-hit drive by Martinez in right-center. A fired-up Cain and Yelich then started celebrating an opening day that looked a lot like Milwaukee's run to the NL Championship Series last October. Continue to Article

Paul Goldschmidt's $144.5 million, six-year contract with the St. Louis Cardinals includes a $20 million signing bonus to be paid over the next five years. Christian Yelich, in fact, did accomplish a great deal in 2018, recording team-leading totals in homers (36), RBIs (110) and batting average (.326) en route to claiming NL Most Valuable Player honors. Milwaukee
The St. Louis Cardinals placed five players on the injured list as they began to shape their roster for Thursday's opener at the Milwaukee Brewers. St. Louis said Monday the official reason for Brett Cecil's designation is carpal tunnel syndrome, though the left-hander also is dealing with arm fatigue and erratic mechanics. Right-hander Carlos Martinez is out with a strained rotator cuff and reliever Luke Gregerson with a right shoulder impingement. Continue to Article

St. Louis
The St. Louis Cardinals announced a five-year extension for newly acquired first baseman Paul Goldschmidt on Saturday. Financial terms were not revealed, but the St. Louis Post Dispatch reported that it will pay him "around $130 million." The deal will keep Goldschmidt, 31, in St. Louis through the 2024 season. "When we made the trade to acquire Paul, we knew we had added one of the game's premier players," Cardinals' President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak said in a statement. Continue to Article
