It was a night of personal milestones in Pittsburgh on Tuesday as Evgeni Malkin became the 88th player in NHL history to record his 1,000th career point, while Alex Ovechkin became just the 49th player to hit the 1,200 point plateau. In the end, it was Malkin's team that ended up getting the two important points in the standings in a 5-3 win that was highlighted by a quick flurry of goals in the second period to completely swing the game, snapping what had been a seven-game winning streak for the defending Stanley Cup champions. With just under eight minutes to play in the second period the Penguins were not only trailing by a pair of goals, but were not even really generating any sort of a consistent threat offensively against Capitals goalie Braden Holtby. Only Claude Giroux (474), Jakub Voracek (467), Wayne Simmonds (457) and Sean Couturier (442) have played more in orange and black since the start of the 2013-14 season. Carl Hagelin watched helplessly from the penalty box as the short-handed unit he helped transform got to work. Seconds after stepping out following another successful kill, Hagelin scored the go-ahead goal on a breakaway to help the Washington Capitals beat the Winnipeg Jets 3-1 on Sunday night for their seventh consecutive victory. Unfortunately, Boychuk, not expecting Voracek's awareness, went down on the play and never returned to the game. However, the injury wasn't severe enough to stop him from calling out Voracek as he left the ice. Voracek was assessed a five-minute major for interference and had a hearing Sunday with the NHL's Department of Player Safety. Continue to Article
