The Washington Capitals appeared to be running on empty as they sputtered toward the end of their season-high six-game road trip. With under 24 hours to refuel after a grueling 12-day trek, the Capitals look to put it in gear on Sunday afternoon when they bid for their fifth straight victory versus the visiting New York Rangers. The Montreal Canadiens will be trying to win their third consecutive game Saturday night when they visit the Toronto Maple Leafs, their old rival who themselves will be attempting to stop a three-game losing streak. The Maple Leafs finished a 3-2-1 trip with two losses in a row then lost the opener of a four-game homestand Thursday night, 3-2 to the Washington Capitals. David Backes didn't know what to think when Boston Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy called his number in the sixth round of a shootout Wednesday night against the Vegas Golden Knights. So, he didn't. Instead, Backes took instruction from teammate Brad Marchand, skated in stick side on veteran goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury and scored the game-winner low-glove side to lift Boston to a 3-2 win over the Golden Knights for the Bruins' season-high seventh straight victory. The NHL's Department of Player Safety announced on Wednesday afternoon that Philadelphia Flyers defender Radko Gudas has been suspended two games for a high-sticking incident that took place on Monday night against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Gudas was assessed a two-minute minor for high-sticking Nikita Kucherov, the NHL's leading-scorer, in the third period of the Lightning's 5-2 win when he brought his stick down over Kucherov's head with a two-handed swing. The DoPS said that while it agreed with Gudas' assessment that it was not an overly violent swing, it was still an act that warranted a penalty during the play and some sort of supplemental discipline, whether it be a warning, fine or suspension.
