The Calgary Flames and Pittsburgh Penguins, who meet Saturday at PPG Paints Arena, each have 25 games left in the regular season and are feeling some pressure. The Penguins, who have won two in a row following a four-game losing streak, are hardly assured of making the playoffs but are making that their focus. NBCSN's coverage of the 2018-19 NHL season continues with the Wednesday Night Hockey matchup between the Edmonton Oilers and Pittsburgh Penguins. Barring some kind of a miraculous late-season turnaround it is looking like the Edmonton Oilers are going to fall short of the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the third time in the first four years of Connor McDavid's NHL career. If that turnaround is going to happen, it is going to have to start quickly, and collecting two points against a Pittsburgh Penguins team that will be without Evgeni Malkin (suspension) and Olli Maatta (shoulder injury) on Wednesday Night Hockey would probably be a good place to start. Considering how tough it is to find good defensemen, though, there's the scarier – and probably more likely – reality that they'd be replaced by someone even worse. Considering that Evgeni Malkin might get suspended for his stick-swinging, that could be a costly win in the short-term, but the long-term implications are more fascinating. Again, there's no denying that Maatta has been struggling mightily for some time, but more Jack Johnson is frightening, as you can see from how pitiful they both look via Bill Comeau's SKATR comparison tool, which uses Corsica's data. The Philadelphia Flyers don't have to wait long for a chance to rebound from their first regulation defeat in a month. Trying to make it into the Eastern Conference playoff conversation, Philadelphia was one of the hottest teams in the NHL while riding a 9-0-1 stretch. The Flyers, who averaged 3.8 goals during their run of success, outshot the Penguins 51-28, but they managed only Jakub Voracek's third goal in four games late in the game while on a five-minute power play.
