Edmonton
When you're a team that scores few goals, even a pretty good effort of a given night can be unraveled by a momentary lapse on the ice. The Edmonton Oilers put in that pretty good effort on Wednesday Night Hockey on NBCSN but still came away with the loss, 3-1 to the Pittsburgh Penguins. And the reason for that was a roughly four-minute stretch in the second period where they stopped doing what had made them successful in the rest of the game. Continue to Article

Connor McDavid, the 22-year-old phenom, and Sidney Crosby, the 31-year-old long-time face of the NHL, will have one of their rare head-to-head meetings Wednesday when the Pittsburgh Penguins host the Edmonton Oilers, but the matchup could be overshadowed by team matters. Pittsburgh (29-20-7, 65 points), winner of the Stanley Cup in 2016 and '17, sits in the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference and is concerned with putting together a strong stretch drive to simply reach the playoffs. ''In the end, it's the win that counts,'' said center Nico Hischier, who had assists on all three goals. Continue to Article

If we're talking about National Hockey League coaches that have seen it all, Ken Hitchcock is in that upper echelon. “At this time of year the coaches can't want it more than the players,” Hitchcock said after another lackluster performance in a 5-2 loss against the San Jose Sharks on Saturday night. The only reason the Oilers can even sniff the playoffs this year is Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and a log jam of teams who appear to unwilling to want to separate themselves from each other. When mentally we want to engage, and do it the right way, we've eliminated a lot of odd-man rushes and on top of it our goalie has been playing really solid,'' Sharks captain Joe Pavelski said. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Zack Kassian scored for the Oilers, who have lost seven of eight. Edmonton has also lost five straight at home and is 2-11-0 in its last 13 games at Rogers Place.
