Considering how tough it is to find good defensemen, though, there's the scarier – and probably more likely – reality that they'd be replaced by someone even worse. Considering that Evgeni Malkin might get suspended for his stick-swinging, that could be a costly win in the short-term, but the long-term implications are more fascinating. Again, there's no denying that Maatta has been struggling mightily for some time, but more Jack Johnson is frightening, as you can see from how pitiful they both look via Bill Comeau's SKATR comparison tool, which uses Corsica's data. Connor McDavid, the 22-year-old phenom, and Sidney Crosby, the 31-year-old long-time face of the NHL, will have one of their rare head-to-head meetings Wednesday when the Pittsburgh Penguins host the Edmonton Oilers, but the matchup could be overshadowed by team matters. Pittsburgh (29-20-7, 65 points), winner of the Stanley Cup in 2016 and '17, sits in the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference and is concerned with putting together a strong stretch drive to simply reach the playoffs. The Flyers, who averaged 3.8 goals during their run of success, outshot the Penguins 51-28, but they managed only Jakub Voracek's third goal in four games late in the game while on a five-minute power play. If we're talking about National Hockey League coaches that have seen it all, Ken Hitchcock is in that upper echelon. “At this time of year the coaches can't want it more than the players,” Hitchcock said after another lackluster performance in a 5-2 loss against the San Jose Sharks on Saturday night. The only reason the Oilers can even sniff the playoffs this year is Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and a log jam of teams who appear to unwilling to want to separate themselves from each other. Tyler Johnson had a key goal and a tussle with Sidney Crosby, too. Johnson and J.T. Miller scored third-period goals as the Tampa Bay Lightning stopped a rare two-game skid with a 5-4 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday night. After Johnson got his first goal in 15 games just under five minutes into the period, Miller gave Tampa Bay a 5-3 lead with 5:57 remaining. Continue to Article
