Carolina
The only role the New Jersey Devils are likely going to have in the playoffs this season is being a spoiler, something the Carolina Hurricanes discovered. Marcus Johansson scored twice, a battered Keith Kinkaid made 32 saves and the Devils prevented the Hurricanes from moving into a playoff spot with a 3-2 victory Sunday. ''In the end, it's the win that counts,'' said center Nico Hischier, who had assists on all three goals. Continue to Article

One last time, Toronto had the chance to salute the legendary Bob Cole. The Maple Leafs honoured the play-by-play man with a video tribute at the first T.V. timeout with the Ottawa Senators in town on Wednesday night, acknowledging what's been billed to be Cole's final call in the city he took up residency in for so many Saturday nights. His team scrambling for a spot in the postseason for the first time in nearly 10 years, McElhinney provided the Hurricanes with a jolt, turning aside 23 shots for his first shutout of the season in a 4-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday. Brett Pesce and Jordan Martinook scored from way out to give the Hurricanes the lead and Michael Ferland and Andrei Svechnikov poured it on late as Carolina began a pivotal five-game trip by becoming just the second team all season to hold the Penguins scoreless. Carolina
The Pittsburgh Penguins got a breather Sunday after a whirlwind 48 hours to start the weekend. Pittsburgh, tied for second in the tight Metropolitan Division, split back-to-back games with a 5-3 win Friday at home against Ottawa and a 3-2 loss Saturday at Toronto. Friday morning, the Penguins completed a trade with Florida for forwards Nick Bjugstad and Jared McCann, sending forwards Derick Brassard and Riley Sheahan plus draft picks in exchange. Ottawa
Perhaps the Pittsburgh Penguins should avoid looking at the standings going into home their game Friday against the Ottawa Senators at PPG Paints Arena. Otherwise, the Penguins (27-17-6), who are in contention for the Metropolitan Division title and yet not securely above the playoff cutoff, might notice that the Senators (19-26-5) are in last place in the Atlantic Division. Pittsburgh is 1-7-1 against clubs that are last in their division, not exactly a point of pride. Continue to Article
