Colorado
Not that this is news, but these are dark times for the Ottawa Senators.  Erik Karlsson was traded before the season began, they have yet to re-sign their two best forwards in Mark Stone and Matt Duchene, sparking speculation about one or both of them being traded as well, and they are dead last in the NHL.  That last bit of news would be a silver lining for some rebuilding teams, but Ottawa is in the unique situation of being a rebuilding squad without their first round pick (that pick belongs to the Colorado Avalanche). The potential embarrassment of winning the draft lottery and watching the Avalanche use that pick has become a more and more likely scenario as of late.  Ottawa extended its losing streak to five games on Wednesday with its 5-4 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs.  With that, Ottawa is 19-29-5 this season, which is four points worse than the next lowest team, the New Jersey Devils (20-25-7).  If Ottawa does trade either Duchene or Stone, it would of course only make the chances of finishing in the basement more likely, but it might be a step the Senators have to take if the alternative is watching either forward walk away for nothing over the summer. The Washington Capitals will get to see another old friend when former goalie Philipp Grubauer and his Colorado Avalanche teammates come to town on Thursday night. Washington topped Vancouver and former Capital Jay Beagle 3-2 on Tuesday. There were plenty of emotions in the building that night, as Washington paid a video tribute to the forward, who spent 10 years in D.C. before signing a free-agent deal with the Canucks in the summer. Josh Anderson kept his toe on the blue line and then his fingers crossed. Just the sort of break Columbus needed. Anderson broke a tie with 9:31 remaining, Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 27 shots and the Blue Jackets snapped a five-game skid by beating the Colorado Avalanche 6-3 on Tuesday night. Continue to Article

Toronto Maple Leafs All-Star center Auston Matthews agreed to terms on a five-year, $58.17 million contract extension, the team announced Tuesday. The $11.634 million average is the second highest behind Edmonton Oilers star Connor McDavid ($12.5 million). Toronto's John Tavares, who signed with the Maple Leafs as a free agent in the offseason, dropped to third at $11 million. Continue to Article

Washington
The Washington Capitals will soon have some decisions to make about their future at goaltender. The Capitals signed backup Phoenix Copley to a $3.3 million, three-year extension Monday that keeps him under contract through the 2021-22 season at a salary-cap hit of $1.1 million. Starter Braden Holtby is only signed through the end of next season, and Washington has top prospect Ilya Samsonov and 2014 second-round pick Vitek Vanecek in the system. Continue to Article
