Perhaps the Pittsburgh Penguins should avoid looking at the standings going into home their game Friday against the Ottawa Senators at PPG Paints Arena. Otherwise, the Penguins (27-17-6), who are in contention for the Metropolitan Division title and yet not securely above the playoff cutoff, might notice that the Senators (19-26-5) are in last place in the Atlantic Division. In my opinion, there's really no question that the Toronto Maple Leafs improved by trading for defenseman Jake Muzzin. Instead, it's a matter of: how much better does Muzzin make the Maple Leafs? Without getting into the grittier details, it's easy to look at this as a black-and-white thing: Muzzin's a proven top-four defenseman (sometimes looking downright elite), and that's the area where Toronto needed to improve the most. While Maple Leafs GM Kyle Dubas seems to think he's making progress on an extension with his franchise player, Auston Matthews says his next contract isn't exactly top of mind. The sniper touched on the reported negotiations during NHL All-Star media day in San Jose, reminding us that while his entry-level contract is set to expire, he's actually been in this situation before.
