The Arizona Coyotes and San Jose Sharks are ready to get back to business. When the teams meet Saturday night in San Jose in the first game for both since before the All-Star break, the Sharks could be without defenseman Erik Karlsson. Karlsson, who missed the final three games before the break with a lower-body injury, didn't skate either Thursday or Friday, and Sharks coach Peter DeBoer said he'll have to wait until Saturday to see if the two-time Norris Trophy winner will be able to play against the Coyotes. It wasn't as if Sidney Crosby strode in after his absences at each preceding event at NHL All-Star weekend in San Jose and scored four goals and eight points across two mini games to earn MVP honours at the three-on-three tournament just for effect. In some ways forgotten after failing to attend the first Super Bowl-style media day organized by the NHL, and missing his assignment at the skills competition, too, Crosby reminded us at three aside that he's very much still here. With so many other dominant players setting incredible point paces on the season, it's not glaring oversight to avoid celebrating what's been a superb, but unspectacular scoring season from Crosby. Beginning to grind to bit of a halt at SAP Center now long after U.S. Olympic champion Kendall Coyne-Schofield wowed the crowd as Nathan MacKinnon's replacement in the Fastest Skater event, the NHL All-Star Skills competition needed another memorable moment to push it over the top. Taking off his own Toronto Maple Leafs sweater before stepping into the slot for the shooting accuracy event, Matthews brought the fans to their feet in San Jose by revealing the jersey of current Leafs teammate, occasional dad and Sharks legend Patrick Marleau. With one game remaining prior to the all-star break and their mandated week off, the Caps were looking to end their six-game losing streak and head into the mini-holiday on a winning high. Fans of the Washington Capitals were holding their breath for a few moments on Wednesday night. In the first period of their clash with the Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena, teammates Alex Ovechkin and T.J. Oshie accidentally ran into each other at a pretty good speed. While Oshie, who has a history of concussion problems, got up quickly, Ovechkin was down on the ice for a few moments and play stopped as a result. Continue to Article
