The Chicago Blackhawks hope their bye week and the All-Star break haven't dulled their recent momentum. The Blackhawks, who won their final two games before the break to salvage a disappointing January, return to the ice Friday night at Buffalo. Chicago defeated the defending Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals 8-5 and eked out a 3-2 shootout victory against the New York Islanders, who had been riding a five-game winning streak, before its hiatus. Blackhawks send struggling rookie Henri Jokiharju to Rockford as blue line crowds up originally appeared on nbcsportschicago.com With the Blackhawks getting set to return from their nine-day hiatus in Buffalo, Henri Jokiharju was assigned to the Rockford IceHogs of the American Hockey League on Thursday. It's both surprising but also not, considering his ice time has dipped for the last month and a half. Since winning their second Stanley Cup in 2014 the Kings have been stuck in neutral in the NHL's worst possible place — the middle ground — somewhere between a contender and a lottery team, desperately trying to squeeze out whatever is left of an aging core by adding more aging pieces to it (Dion Phaneuf, Ilya Kovalchuk, Carl Hagelin, etc). The two teams were playing a different sport for the four games, and while the Kings didn't give up much, they never even seemed like they were close to scoring or were capable of doing anything to make Marc-Andre Fleury sweat even a little bit. Los Angeles
The Toronto Maple Leafs made a move to bolster their defensive core, acquiring Jake Muzzin from the Los Angeles Kings on Monday. The move sent prospect left wing Carl Grundstrom, the rights to defenseman Sean Durzi and Toronto's first-round draft pick in the 2019 NHL Draft out to the west coast. The trade immediately makes Toronto's defense better, for the rest of this season and next, too, as Muzzin has one year left on a deal that's paying him an annual average value of $4 million.
