Perhaps the Pittsburgh Penguins should avoid looking at the standings going into home their game Friday against the Ottawa Senators at PPG Paints Arena. Otherwise, the Penguins (27-17-6), who are in contention for the Metropolitan Division title and yet not securely above the playoff cutoff, might notice that the Senators (19-26-5) are in last place in the Atlantic Division. Pittsburgh is 1-7-1 against clubs that are last in their division, not exactly a point of pride. Continue to Article

Prior to setting a blistering time around the rink at the NHL All-Star Skills this past weekend, Kendall Coyne Schofield made sure Connor McDavid was in the same boat as she was. “I asked him if he was nervous,” Coyne Schofield told the broadcast team on NBCSN prior to Wednesday Night Hockey. Heading into their meeting Wednesday, the Tampa Bay Lightning and Pittsburgh Penguins have contrasting demeanors. Tampa Bay (37-10-2), comfortably in first place in the Eastern Conference, has been off since Jan. 19 because of a bye week and the All-Star break and has been able to take a couple days to practice, shake some rust and gear up for the stretch run. The Penguins (26-17-6) also started their break on Jan. 19 but got back to playing Monday and were less than thrilled with their performance in a 6-3 loss to New Jersey. Continue to Article

Whenever the Pittsburgh Penguins have had some sort of defensive breakdown, or danger zone turnover, or simply a “what the heck was that!?” kind of play with the puck this season coach Mike Sullivan has usually followed it up after the game by talking about the delicate balancing act he has to walk with his roster. When you have Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Phil Kessel, and Kris Letang on your roster you have an advantage over almost every other team in the league every single night. Given the way the season has gone, with the Penguins going through equal stretches of dominance and sloppiness, he has had to hit these talking points a lot. Continue to Article

Barry Trotz's message to Mathew Barzal before he left for the 2019 NHL All-Star Game was simple. “Take note of the top, top players, the absolute top players, how they interact with not only the fans, but other players and how prepared they are,” the New York Islanders head coach said earlier this week. Set up with Crosby and Penguins defenseman Kris Letang, the trio helped guide the Metropolitan Division to the All-Star title, first topping the Atlantic Division 7-4 before winning the $1M prize after a 10-5 victory over the Central Division in the final.
