A long midseason break apparently was just what Conor Sheary needed. Coming back from a bye week followed by the All-Star weekend, the Buffalo Sabres forward was ready, ending an 11-game goal drought with the winner Tuesday night. Sheary got an easy tap-in 2:12 into the third period to lift Buffalo over the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-4. Continue to Article

A “smattering” of Columbus Blue Jackets fans booed Artemi Panarin during Tuesday's game against the Buffalo Sabres. The Athletic's Aaron Portzline reports that there was such a smattering of boos when Panarin's name was mentioned during starting lineup announcements, and also often when he touched the puck. Such rumblings were also audible to the Columbus Dispatch's Brian Hedger when Panarin's name was mentioned after Columbus goals, with things being a bit louder on his first assist of the game than his second. The Colorado Avalanche and Buffalo Sabres are having a nearly identical experience on the roller coaster ride that is their 2018-19 season. It all started with what was probably considered a pleasant surprise and a lot of excitement, and has quickly devolved into a season that could end with bitter disappointment if things don't start to turn around quickly. While both teams opened the season with their share of flaws on their respective rosters, they both stormed out of the gate and found themselves sitting with the exact same record (37 points) through their first 27 games. During the 10-year stretch between 2008-09 and 2017-18 there were 45 teams that recorded at least 37 points through their first 27 games in a season, with 42 of them (93.3 percent) going on to make the playoffs. Elias Pettersson was barely 8 years old when Joe Pavelski scored in his first NHL game with the San Jose Sharks. A dozen years later, Pavelski is still going strong in San Jose, and Pettersson has not only joined him at the highest professional level, but the elite centers will team up at the NHL All-Star Game in San Jose on Saturday night. Pettersson and Pavelski are on the Pacific Division squad that will attempt to defend its All-Star title. Continue to Article
