The New Jersey Devils will play their first home game of the new year Thursday against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Devils hope the return home after a 1-3-0 road trip also will bring a return to the form that had them finish 2018 with three straight wins, two at home. New Jersey scored early in the first period Tuesday, then looked like a team that was eager to return home as they lost 5-1 to the Buffalo Sabres, allowing five second-period goals "If you look at every aspect -- the speed, the puck management, the puck battles -- it wasn't good enough to give ourselves a chance to win the game," Devils coach John Hynes said. Buffalo Sabres fans finally had reason to believe. After years of being stuck at the bottom of the NHL standings, the Sabres finally looked to be returning to relevance thanks to an incredible start to the 2018-19 season that featured a 10-game winning streak throughout most of November. When they won that 10th consecutive game on Nov. 27, the Sabres were sitting with a 17-6-2 record (by far their best start in years), had the best record in the league, and looked to be a near lock to make the playoffs for the first time since the 2010-11 season. After tonight, we may see a little bit more of them moving forward as the Bruins attempt to solidify their line combos. Four shots on net, six shot attempts and a couple of hits for David Backes in 10:15 of ice time through two periods, as it appears that he truly enjoys getting a look on the second line with David Krejci and Jake DeBrusk. Oh yeah, he had a pretty sweet goal too, when he smoked a wrist shot over the Buffalo goalie's glove hand after motoring down the left wing for a shot off the rush. Continue to Article
