The Blackhawks had big plans for Nick Schmaltz. Set to become a restricted free agent at the end of the season, there was never any doubt that the Blackhawks would be able to fit him into their long-term plans. "I guess I want to make it clear our No. 1 priority as we move forward is to make sure we can keep these young players - DeBrincat and Schmaltz and [Vinnie] Hinostroza and some other young players that are going to maybe join our team over the next year or two," Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman said on April 9, 2018. The Arizona Coyotes have officially moved on from the Dylan Strome experience. A little over three years after making him the third overall pick in the 2015 draft (right behind Connor McDavid and Jack Eichel), the Coyotes traded the 21-year-old Strome to the Chicago Blackhawks Sunday night. The Coyotes also sent forward Brendan Perlini to Chicago as part of the trade. Continue to Article

Chicago
The Blackhawks and Coyotes have gotten together on another trade as Nick Schmaltz has been shipped to Arizona in exchange for forwards Brendan Perlini and Dylan Strome, the team announced late Sunday night. Schmaltz, 22, has had trouble taking that next step in his progression with only two goals and nine assists in 23 games this season, which is a bit concerning considering he's set to become a restricted free agent at the end of the season. Perlini, 22, has six points (two goals, four assists) in 21 games this season and is also in the final year of his entry-level contract that carries an $863,333 cap hit. He's coming off a campaign in which he set career highs in all three scoring categories with 17 goals, 13 assists and 30 points but has struggled to build on that this season, watching his average ice time drop to 13:44 from the 14:31 a year ago. Look, when Andrei Vasilevskiy went down with a broken foot, most people would have expected a bit of a downturn in the crease. Dominique’s save percentage won’t woo the masses, but he’s made enough key saves enough times in between the pipes for the Lightning that he’s won four of six starts since Vasilevskiy went down on Nov. 10. Domingue was stellar in Friday’s 4-2 win for the Lightning against the Chicago Blackhawks on NBCSN, stopping 30-of-32 for his seventh win of the season. Continue to Article
