It wasn’t so long ago that the Oilers’ start was a punchline. Literally every goal of their season was running through Connor McDavid exclusively, and it took until Game No. 5 before someone scored a goal at 5-on-5 without the best player alive getting in on the action. People were starting to talk very seriously about how good this team can be after kind of writing them off all summer and having a good laugh at the expense of everyone on the team who is not McDavid or one of his linemates. As they embark on their longest road trip ever, the Minnesota Wild managed to bounce back from a loss in Vancouver despite playing for the second night in a row. Mikael Granlund scored with 5:48 left, Eric Staal had a goal and two assists, and the Wild beat the Edmonton Oilers 4-3 on Tuesday night. The Red Wings took an early 3-0 lead but ended up having to scrap for a victory. Tyler Bertuzzi scored the go-ahead goal late in the third period and Jimmy Howard had 34 saves as Detroit got its second straight win, 5-3 over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday night. Bertuzzi scored the go-ahead goal off Sergei Bobrovsky's stick with 3:24 left in the game, and Dylan Larkin got an empty-netter - his second tally of the night - with 43 seconds left to seal the victory. The Edmonton Oilers successfully survived the early part of a schedule that could have easily buried them in the division standings. From Oct. 16 through last Saturday, Edmonton played six straight against teams that collected at least 100 points last season. The Oilers went 4-1-1 over that span, which included a convincing win over the defending Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals last Thursday and an overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins two nights earlier. The veteran defenseman got his 500th career point when he snapped a tie with 6:45 left, helping the Jets beat the Detroit Red Wings 2-1 on Friday night.
