Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson has appealed the 20-game suspension he received Wednesday from the NHL's Department of Player Safety for a check to the head of St. Louis Blues forward Oskar Sundqvist. After Capitals coach Todd Reirden made that known Thursday, the NHL Players Association confirmed that they filed the appeal Friday on Wilson's behalf. Wilson had an in-person hearing with the league Wednesday and had 48 hours from the time of receiving the suspension to provide an appeal in writing to NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, who would be the first to review the case. After Corey Crawford went down with a concussion on Dec. 23, 2017, the Blackhawks had nobody to turn to or depend on for a long period of time. The Blackhawks brought in Ward because they wanted somebody in the short term who's capable of handling a bulk of the load, if needed, but also stay fresh and add value in a backup role. A year ago the Blackhawks kicked off the season with a 10-1 statement win against the two-time reigning Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins. Trailing 3-2 late in the third period, Patrick Kane connected with Brent Seabrook for the game-tying goal then finished the job 38 seconds into overtime by roofing a backhander past Craig Anderson as the Blackhawks defeated the Ottawa Senators 4-3 at Canadian Tire Centre on Thursday. In a strange Opening Day twist, the Blackhawks had an unfortunate goaltending situation unfold during Thursday's morning skate ahead of their first game against the Ottawa Senators. Anton Forsberg was injured after getting hit with the puck in an unspecified spot, and did not return.
