Montreal
In their season-opening games, the Pittsburgh Penguins won in overtime but thought there was a fair amount of room for improvement and the Montreal Canadiens lost in overtime but were encouraged by what they thought was a strong performance. "I'm disappointed in the loss -- you always think you could have, should have won the game -- but I'm not disappointed in the effort we put out," Montreal coach Claude Julien said of a 3-2 loss to Toronto. The truce finally came this summer when Johnson joined Malkin and the rest of the Pittsburgh Penguins after signing a five-year, $16.25 million deal. The move allowed Johnson to breathe a sigh of relief on many levels, not the least of which was the knowledge the 31-year-old defenseman wouldn't have to crash into Malkin multiple times a year. If Karl Alzner can’t crack the Habs’ blue line now, what do the next three years look like for him? On Wednesday, Montreal Canadiens defenceman Karl Alzner will lose his streak of 622 consecutive games played — not because he’s suffered an injury or is dealing with some manner of personal business, but simply because the team has opted to make him a healthy scratch. There’s no justification for an impassioned defence of his spot in any NHL lineup — even with the sub-par unit the Canadiens will ice. Continue to Article
