Houston
It began as a classic pitchers duel but, as so often happens in Minute Maid Park, especially in the postseason, the longball ended up being the story of the game. The Astros rode four dingers — from Alex Bregman, George Springer, Jose Altuve and Martin Maldonado — to beat Cleveland 7-2 and take a 1-0 lead in the ALDS. Justin Verlander and Corey Kluber started off as expected, holding opposing batters hitless through three, with Verlander continuing to no-hit Cleveland into the fourth. In the bottom of the fourth Alex Bregman broke up the no-no with a solo homer on a 2-1 sinker to make it 1-0 Houston. Cleveland
George Springer and the Houston Astros picked up right where they left off last postseason, hitting four home runs to power past the Cleveland Indians 7-2 Friday in Game 1 of the AL Division Series. Alex Bregman, Jose Altuve and Martin Maldonado also connected for the Astros, who hit a World Series-record 15 homers last year in winning their first championship. Houston's pop backed up a solid start by Justin Verlander, who bested Corey Kluber in a matchup of Cy Young Award-winning aces in the first postseason meeting between these teams. Continue to Article

Houston
The Astros' title defense got off to a pristine start Friday afternoon. Houston bashed four homers and rode a strong start from Justin Verlander to a 7-2 victory over the Indians in Game 1 of the American League Division Series. Alex Bregman opened the scoring of the Astros’ championship run last year with a solo homer off an ace in Game 1 of the ALDS—and he did it again on Friday. Continue to Article

Cleveland
A Houston Astros fan watching Game 1 of the American League Division Series from the left field stands at Minute Maid Park says a fellow fan followed up on a promise that surely put him back hundreds of dollars. Eddie Flores, 42, said he’d buy everyone in the section a beer if George Springer hit a home run, and if you know anything about the Astros you know what happened next. “If @georgespringer hits a homerun, I’m buying everyone in the section a beer!” Springer hits a homerun. Cleveland
With the "opener" gambit now influencing postseason strategies in Oakland and Milwaukee, the pitching matchup for Game 1 of the American League Division Series between the Cleveland Indians and Houston Astros represents a throwback in this era of bullpening. The Indians and Astros will turn to tried-and-true aces aiming to gain an early edge in the series on Friday at Minute Maid Park. Right-handers Corey Kluber (20-7, 2.89 ERA) and Justin Verlander (16-9, 2.52 ERA) have combined for 16 200-inning and 13 200-strikeout seasons, 10 All-Star Game appearances, three Cy Young awards, and two ERA titles, with Verlander adding a Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player award, plus a pitching triple crown, to the mix.
