Cleveland
With the "opener" gambit now influencing postseason strategies in Oakland and Milwaukee, the pitching matchup for Game 1 of the American League Division Series between the Cleveland Indians and Houston Astros represents a throwback in this era of bullpening. The Indians and Astros will turn to tried-and-true aces aiming to gain an early edge in the series on Friday at Minute Maid Park. Right-handers Corey Kluber (20-7, 2.89 ERA) and Justin Verlander (16-9, 2.52 ERA) have combined for 16 200-inning and 13 200-strikeout seasons, 10 All-Star Game appearances, three Cy Young awards, and two ERA titles, with Verlander adding a Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player award, plus a pitching triple crown, to the mix. Oakland previously shared the record with the Cleveland Indians. Continue to Article

Cubs manager Joe Maddon will remain with the team through 2019, president of operations Theo Epstein said in a press conference on Wednesday. Maddon, whose Cubs lost the NL Central tiebreaker on Monday before being eliminated from the 2018 playoffs on Tuesday, is on the last year of a five-year, $25 million contract that he signed in 2015. While the Cubs have made the postseason in all four years under Maddon's tenure, sources told MLB.com that the Cubs will not extend Maddon's contract until he is re-evaluated following the 2019 season. Carlos Carrasco and Trevor Bauer combined for a five-hitter, Francisco Lindor homered and scored twice, and the Cleveland Indians beat the Kansas City Royals 2-1 on Sunday. Carrasco (16-10) was working with a limited pitch count in a tuneup before an anticipated start in Game 2 of the American League Division Series against Houston on Saturday. Carrasco finished the season with a 3.38 ERA. Continue to Article
