When Aaron Judge hit his 27th of the year and the Yankees' fourth of the game in the eighth inning of their 11-6 win Friday night in Boston, it gave the Bronx Bombers 264 homers for the season, matching the number hit by the Seattle Mariners in 1997. Much has changed since Los Angeles Angels left-hander Tyler Skaggs threw one of his best games of the season against the Oakland A's on June 15. Skaggs has since been on the disabled list three times, while the A's morphed into the hottest team in baseball over the next three months, making up a 10-game deficit for the final American League wild-card spot and, ultimately, clinching a postseason berth on Monday. Giancarlo Stanton wrapped the third inning with a dramatic RBI single, but the Yankees did most of their damage in the fourth after Gleyber Torres drove in two runs on a replay-challenged double, followed by Andrew McCutchen‘s RBI single and Aaron Hicks‘ three-run 398-footer off of William Cuevas. Following another two homers from Luke Voit and Aaron Judge, the latter of whom had yet to produce a single home run since mid-July, the Yankees brought their home run total to 264 on the season — not only a franchise best, but enough to tie the 1997 Mariners for the most in MLB history, too.
