Ahead all night, the Atlanta Braves watched a two-run lead disappear in the ninth inning. Instead, the Braves found a way to scratch out a victory and increase their NL East lead. Dansby Swanson scored the go-ahead run on Yoshihisa Hirano's wild pitch in the 10th inning, and the Braves recovered after blowing a two-run lead in the ninth to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-6 Thursday. Just a few hours after it was recommended to Shohei Ohtani that he have Tommy John surgery, the two-way player homered twice, singled twice and led the Los Angeles Angels to a 9-3 victory over the Texas Rangers on Wednesday night in Arlington, Texas. An MRI exam Wednesday morning revealed new damage to the ulnar collateral ligament in Ohtani's right elbow, and the club would like the 24-year-old right-hander to have surgery that likely would keep him off a major league mound until the 2020 season. Ohtani, who hasn't yet decided whether he'll have the surgery, is not affected by the injury when he hits, and Wednesday's game was a perfect example. Continue to Article

Brandon Phillips hit a two-out, two-run homer in the ninth inning Wednesday, highlighting his long-awaited season debut and capping the biggest comeback by the Boston Red Sox this year for a 9-8 win over the Atlanta Braves. The Red Sox overcame a late six-run deficit and seesawed past Atlanta to sweep the three-game series between division leaders. The Atlanta Braves dropped the first couple of games in their series against the Red Sox but it looked like they’d avoid the sweep today. With the Red Sox resting multiple regulars, Atlanta took a 7-1 lead after five innings, cruising behind starter Mike Foltynewicz. Unfortunately for the Braves, games are nine innings long.
