Community Picks: Cleveland 0% vs Chi White Sox 0%

On an August night in this future-facing season, the White Sox momentarily took a look to the past. Jim Thome, the Land of Lincoln native who spent four seasons on the South Side and immediately became a fan favorite, was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame earlier this summer, and the White Sox honored him before Saturday's game against the Cleveland Indians, the team whose cap Thome is sporting on his Hall of Fame plaque. As fun as it was for fans to get to see the team celebrate one of the all-time greats - they lined up for his bobblehead and gave him a standing ovation during the pregame ceremony - Thome is also a part of this rebuilding effort on the South Side. Esteban Loaiza, a two-time All-Star in his 14-year major league career, faces a minimum of 10 years in prison and a maximum of a life sentence after his guilty plea to cocaine possession with intent to distribute charges in San Diego on Friday. In his plea, Loaiza acknowledged having some 44 pounds of cocaine when he was arrested in February in Imperial Beach, near the border of Tijuana, Mexico, where he was born. Giancarlo Stanton hit his first grand slam in over four years, Luis Severino settled down after a shaky start to become the first 15-game winner in the American League, and the New York Yankees beat the host Chicago White Sox 7-3 Wednesday night to finish a three-game sweep. Stanton gave the Yankees a 6-2 lead when he hooked a full-count fastball by Lucas Giolito (7-9) just inside the foul pole and into the right field seats with one out in the second.
