Washington
Wednesday's 7-0 season-opening win for the Washington Capitals ended on somewhat of a sour note as Lars Eller was left bloodied after a fight with Brad Marchand. Why would a player like Eller who had zero fights in his career until Wednesday's game want to drop the gloves with a guy like Marchand who is never afraid to mix things up? Marchand, however, would not take no for an answer and began throwing punches before Eller could even throw off his gloves, essentially forcing him into the fight. Continue to Article

Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson was banned 20 games by the NHL on Wednesday for a blindside hit to the head of an opponent during a preseason game, the latest and most severe punishment in what the league called an "unprecedented" series of suspensions for the physical player. The right winger's fourth ban in less than 13 months will cost him nearly a quarter of the 82-game regular season — only five NHL players have been suspended longer for on-ice play — and $1.26 million in salary. It was announced just hours before the reigning Stanley Cup champion Capitals opened their title defense by beating the visiting Boston Bruins 7-0. Continue to Article

From banner to blowout, the Washington Capitals' Stanley Cup defense is off to a rousing start. After watching the franchise's first Cup banner ascend to the rafters, the Alex Ovechkin-led Capitals scored two goals in the first two minutes on the way to a 7-0 thrashing of the Boston Bruins on Wednesday night. T.J. Oshie opened the scoring 24 seconds in and Evgeny Kuznetsov scored the first of his two goals at 1:47 to give Washington the fastest first two goals by a defending champion in a season opener in NHL history. Jack Johnson has spent nearly half his life tangling with Evgeni Malkin in front of the net in rinks all over the world. The truce finally came this summer when Johnson joined Malkin and the rest of the Pittsburgh Penguins after signing a five-year, $16.25 million deal. The move allowed Johnson to breathe a sigh of relief on many levels, not the least of which was the knowledge the 31-year-old defenseman wouldn't have to crash into Malkin multiple times a year. The NHL suspended Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson 20 games on Wednesday for a check to the head of St. Louis Blues forward Oskar Sundqvist in Sunday's pre season game. The league cited three factors in the length of the suspension, saying it was an illegal hit to the head, caused an injury and was delivered by a repeat offender. "Including pre season and post season games played, this is Wilson's fourth suspension in his last 105 games, an unprecedented frequency of suspensions in the history of the department of player safety," the league said in its explanatory video.
