The ball cleared the center field wall, and the sellout crowd roared. Bryce Harper threw his bat in the air, thrust both index fingers skyward and yelled with delight as a shower of streamers rained upon the crowd of 43,698. With an exceptional display of power and clutch hitting, Harper rallied in the final round, connecting on pitches from his father to beat Kyle Schwarber of the Chicago Cubs 19-18. After he connected with the game winner, the Nationals star immediately went into celebration mode. Continue to Article

The day after the Chicago Cubs won the 2016 World Series, the St. Louis Cardinals sent out a press release. Manager Mike Matheny had agreed to a three-year contract extension, keeping him in town through 2020. The Cardinals had just missed the postseason for the first time in six years and the division’s landscape was shifting under their feet. Continue to Article

Despite missing their prized-free-agent pitcher for nearly two months — with no return date in sight — and an offense flawed by inconsistency until three weeks ago, the Cubs enter the final day of the season’s first half with more optimism and less urgency. “We have all the pieces right there to make it work, and everyone believes that,” Kyle Hendricks said before pitching five innings of two-run ball Saturday in an 11-6 victory over the Padres. “You’ve seen the product on the field when it all comes together, and that’s all you need. Despite two five-game losing streaks, the absence of injured right-hander Yu Darvish since May 20 and a top-heavy rotation, the Cubs this weekend overtook the Brewers for the National League Central Division lead with a 54-38 record — only two games off the pace set by the 2016 World Series title team and seven games better than the 2017 team that needed a strong second half to overtake the Brewers. The St. Louis Cardinals have made a major change in the dugout. Following Saturday night's loss to the Reds (CIN 8, STL 2), the Cardinals announced manager Mike Matheny has been relieved of his duties. Hitting coach John Mabry and assistant hitting coach Bill Mueller were let go as well. Bench coach Mike Shildt will take over as interim manager. "Mike Matheny has served the St. Louis Cardinals organization with tremendous dedication and pride and I am thankful for his service to the Cardinals over the past six and a half seasons," said Cardinals chairman and CEO Bill DeWitt Jr. in a statement. "On behalf of the entire Cardinals organization, I would like to wish Mike the very best."   "These Continue to Article

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals aren't accustomed to stretches of mediocrity, and certainly not to reports of clubhouse unrest. The prospect of a third straight year without a postseason berth has spelled the end for manager Mike Matheny. Matheny was stunningly fired Saturday night following an 8-2 loss to the Cincinnati Reds, a defeat that dropped St. Louis to 47-46 and 7 1/2 games back of the NL Central-leading Chicago Cubs. Bench coach Mike Shildt was named the team's interim manager. Hitting coach John Mabry and assistant hitting coach Bill Mueller were also fired. The Cardinals haven't missed three straight postseasons since 1997-99. "These decisions are never easy, but we felt Continue to Article
