With the Pittsburgh Pirates on a four game winning steak to enter the All-Star game (woot woot) what better way to celebrate the mid-summer classic than by going back and looking at some baseball style goals by Sidney Crosby? Related: thankfully it’s “mid-summer” now which means you can almost hear ruts being cut into a fresh sheet of ice and whistles blowing for the start of NHL training camp. That’s a fun trip down memory lane. Those goals are just so ridiculously coordinated, the first time maybe it’s a fluke. The second time, man this guy is luxky. But to see this become basically a repeatable skill to swat pucks out of mid-air and into the net is no fluke at all. Speaking of Sid and other Continue to Article

Most of the attention surrounding the possible moves that the Milwaukee Brewers could make before the trade deadline has, to this point, been focused on adding another hitter. The Brewers have been repeatedly linked to the top rental bat on the market, Manny Machado, and have also been mentioned as a possible suitor for Eduardo Escobar of the Twins or Whit Merrifield of the Royals. Milwaukee’s average of 4.33 runs per game ranks in the bottom half of the National League, and the offense could certainly use a boost. But the Brewers have also run into some pitching woes of late, although they have been more so due to injuries than to poor performance. Milwaukee’s rotation ranks 11th overall in Continue to Article

The Milwaukee Brewers really, really need it to be Monday. Up to five straight losses at the tail end of their 21 games-in-20 days stretch, another player is landing on the disabled list ahead of the All-Star Break. Jonathan Villar is the latest. He’ll be shut down for 10 days, and Brett Phillips will rejoin the club. Braun may be back in time for the Brewers’ first series after the break against the NL West-leading Dodgers, but the rest of the crew either won’t be ready (Pina) or won’t be eligible to return until the following week against Washington. At this rate the Brewers might just need to make a trade (for Manny Machado or someone else) just to field at 25-man roster. Tom Haudricourt says Continue to Article

Milwaukee
A series sweep of the Milwaukee Brewers hardly seemed likely for the Pittsburgh Pirates earlier this month. During a five-game losing streak, the Pirates were outscored 51-15 and struggled in just about every area. Since then, however, Pittsburgh (47-49) has won seven of eight. Pittsburgh's hot streak includes a five-game winning streak and, Saturday, a doubleheader sweep of the Brewers. So, the Pirates can indeed go into the All-Star break with a five-game series sweep of Milwaukee with a win Sunday at PNC Park. "We're playing really good baseball right now," said rookie right-hander Clay Holmes, who pitched six shutout innings in the second game Saturday for his first major league win, 6-2 Continue to Article

ESPN The St. Louis Cardinals fired manager Mike Matheny on Saturday night, a move that came shortly after an 8-2 loss to the Cincinnati Reds dropped them to 47-46 on the season. The team named bench coach Mike Shildt interim manager. It also relieved hitting coach John Mabry and assistant hitting coach Bill Mueller of their duties. "Mike Matheny has served the St. Louis Cardinals organization with tremendous dedication and pride and I am thankful for his service to the Cardinals over the past six and a half seasons," Cardinals chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. said in a statement. "On behalf of the entire Cardinals organization, I would like to wish Mike the very best." It marks the first time the Cardinals Continue to Article
