CLEVELAND — Gary Sanchez left the Yankees on Saturday bound for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, where he will start a minor league rehab assignment Sunday. The plan is Sanchez will catch seven innings and stay with the RailRiders when they go away. Sanchez will DH then get an off day. “Hopefully he is ready to join us the second half,’’ said Aaron Boone, who expects Sanchez to be ready to catch Friday night against the Mets at Yankee Stadium. Sanchez has been on the disabled list since June 25 with a strained right groin. Gleyber Torres took batting practice on the field Saturday and participated in agility drills earlier in the day. Torres will attend the All-Star Game festivities but won’t Continue to Article

*All results from games played on Saturday, July 14th, 2018. Triple-A: Las Vegas 51s (45-48) LAS VEGAS 2, ALBUQUERQUE 1/ 6 (BOX) The 51s won their third-straight game to open the second half of the 2018 season, and they received some timely intervention from the weather in the process. Chris Flexen got the start for the 51s and he was on top of his game, giving up just two hits and one run over six quality frames of work. Flexen also singled twice and reached base in all three of his plate appearances against three Albuquerque pitchers. Kevin Kaczmarski singled in the first run of the game for Vegas with the bases loaded, and Flexen drew a walk to force in another run just minutes later. The Continue to Article

The Mets made Nationals starter Austin Voth’s major league debut a rough one. After Voth got through the first unscathed, the Mets played some small ball in the bottom of the second, stringing together four straight singles to start the inning. The fourth—courtesy of a hot Amed Rosario—plated the first run of the game, bringing Zack Wheeler to the plate with the bases loaded. Wheeler launched a sacrifice fly to deep left-center to help his own cause(tm), and Bryce Harper’s off-line throw allowed the other runners to advance. Brandon Nimmo followed with a runscoring ground out to give the Mets an early 3-0 lead. Wheeler would make his batwork stand up, cruising through the early innings, and keeping Continue to Article

As the World Cup finale plays in my living room, it’s seems like the right time to reflect on “America’s pastime” – baseball – and its curious standing these days. The sport gets it close-up on Tuesday night, when the Major-League All-Star Game is played in the nation’s capital. President Trump is not expected to be attendance, though he easily could zip over to the festivities upon his return from his meeting with Vladimir Putin. Baseball made more political news this past week, in the aftermath of Trump’s Supreme Court announcement, when it was reported that Judge Brett Kavanaugh had racked up somewhere between $60,000-$200,000 in debt courtesy of several credit cards and a loan. The White Continue to Article

Friday night the Nationals lost for the fourth time in their last six games as they had no answer for Mets righty Noah Syndergaard in his return from the disabled list (NYM 4, WAS 2). The loss dropped Washington to 47-47 on the season. In the fifth inning of Friday's game, Bryce Harper hit a tailor made 6-4-3 double play ball with two men on base to end the inning. Harper did not run out of the box and the Mets turned the double play with ease. Would he have beaten it out? Maybe. Either way, the optics were quite bad. Bad enough that, on Saturday, manager Dave Martinez talked it out with Harper. From the Associated Press: "I've spoken to Bryce and that's a conversation that will stay between Continue to Article
