Albert "Red" Schoendienst, a St. Louis Cardinals staple since the 1940s, died Wednesday at age 95. Schoendienst's tenure with the Cardinals organization began as a player from 1945-56 and 1961-63. Cardinals owner and CEO William O. DeWitt Jr. said in a statement, "Red was one of the greatest Cardinals of all time, and a beloved member of the Cardinals organization for over six decades. Fred “Red” Schoendienst, a St. Louis Cardinals legend who was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1989, has died at age 95. St. Louis Cardinals legend and Baseball Hall of Famer Red Schoendienst died Wednesday, the team has announced. Schoendienst played in the majors for 19 seasons, and had two notable stints with St. Louis as an outfielder and eventually the team’s starting second baseman. He played for the Cardinals from 1945-56, helping the team to a World Series championship in 1946, and again from 1961-63. One start after his return from Tommy John surgery, St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Alex Reyes had a season-ending operation Wednesday that repaired a tendon attached to the strained latissimus dorsi muscle in the upper right side of his back. St. Louis said Dr. Anthony Romeo operated in Philadelphia. Cardinals general manager Michael Girsch said there was partial fraying between the lat tendon and the bone, and the surgery reattached the tendon to the bone. Continue to Article
