Trying to stabilize their bullpen, hoping for a spark and showing faith in their most advanced pitching prospect, the Cubs will drop Jen-Ho Tseng into the middle of a pennant race and start the Taiwanese right-hander on Thursday night against the New York Mets at Wrigley Field. Tseng put himself in position to make his big-league debut with a breakthrough season, going 13-4 with a 2.54 ERA in 24 starts between Double-A Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa. The Theo Epstein regime – which is still waiting to fully develop a homegrown starter – sees Tseng as someone who can throw four pitches for strikes, keep hitters off-balance without overpowering stuff and follow a scouting report. Think Kyle Hendricks Continue to Article

For more than 100 years, American League teams have gone on winning streaks of varying lengths - short ones, long ones, double-digit ones. Nothing, though, like the one the Cleveland Indians have pieced together. Moving past the ''Moneyball'' Oakland Athletics, the Indians set the AL record with their 21st straight win on Wednesday, 5-3 over the Detroit Tigers, to join only two other teams in the past 101 years to win that many consecutive games. The Cleveland Indians earned an American League record 21st consecutive win on Wednesday with a 5-3 victory over the visiting Detroit Tigers. The victory moved Cleveland past the 2002 Oakland Athletics for the AL record and tied the 1935 Chicago Cubs, who play in the National League, for the second-longest winning streak in baseball history. Only the 1916 New York Giants (26) had a longer run of success but their remarkable stretch, which is recognized by Major League Baseball as the longest in major league history, included a tie. The Indians beat the Tigers, 5-3, on Wednesday afternoon in Cleveland to win their 21st straight game. Jay Bruce, who the Mets traded to the Indians last month, hit a three-run homer during Wednesday's win. Their 21 straight wins are an American League record, and the longest winning streak in baseball since the Cubs won 21 straight games in 1935. Before the Indians, the last team to win 20 or more straight games was the Athletics in 2002. Their streak ended at 20.  The 1916 New York Giants hold the record for the longest winning streak ever, with 26. That streak includes an unofficial tie that happened after their 12th straight win. The tie was called due to rain after nine innings with the Continue to Article

The Mets bullpen has underperformed this season, pitching to a 4.56 ERA that ranks 24th in MLB, as well as walk and home run rates that place them in the bottom third of the league. Behind those numbers, though, are two very different seasons. The first half Mets bullpen was one of the worst in the game -- 27th in ERA and dead last in WHIP. They had blown nearly half of their save opportunities and walked over 10% of the batters they faced. Since the All-Star break, though, they have largely righted the ship, with an ERA in the top 10 and a WHIP around the middle of the pack. The Mets bullpen is still quite shallow and needs plenty of revamping over the offseason if the team hopes to compete Continue to Article

The Cleveland Indians claimed the record for the most consecutive wins by an American League team after taking their 21st game in a row Wednesday. The Indians' 5-3 triumph in sweeping the Detroit Tigers at Progressive Field extended a winning streak that began on August 24 against the Boston Red Sox. The victory broke a tie with the 2002 Oakland Athletics for the longest streak by an AL team and leaves the Indians in a tie with a pair of NL teams, the 1935 Chicago Cubs and 1880 Chicago White Stockings - a franchise that later became the Cubs - at 21 in a row. Phillies (55-89) vs. Marlins (68-76) 7:05 p.m. on CSN; streaming live on CSNPhilly.com and the NBC Sports App Coming off a strange/exciting/frustrating series opener, the Phillies turn to Aaron Nola tonight as they look to clinch a season series win over the Marlins (see lineup). Here are some thoughts on Game 2: • Rhys Hoskins' game-tying home run in the 10th inning last night came on a 100 mph fastball and wasn't even fully barreled. The faster the balls comes in, the faster it theoretically goes out, but this was another clear sign of Hoskins' power and strength. The ball traveled 431 feet to dead-center. • Hoskins, Nick Williams and J.P. Crawford combined to reach base 13 times in 23 plate Continue to Article

Just one month after the Dodgers appeared to be on their own record-setting pace, the Cleveland Indians are in the midst of a spectacular run that has made them the talk of baseball. The Indians won their 20th consecutive game on Tuesday night, shutting down the Detroit Tigers 2-0 thanks to another sterling effort from ace pitcher Corey Kluber. The victory tied the American League record for consecutive victories, set by the famous "Moneyball" Oakland Athletics in 2002. Continue to Article

Mets rookie 1B Dominic Smith entered September in a 7-for-50 slump, batting just .140 with only three extra base hits in 15 games. However, during 10 games and 42 plate appearances during September, Smith is batting .289 with a .357 OBP, two home runs, three doubles, and eight RBI. "My whole career I've always started slow, so it didn't bother me," Smith recently said, according to the Bergen Record. "I'm good enough to play at this level, I know I belong, and if I continue to stick to the process and stick to my approach of hitting the ball hard, things will continue to turn around." "He's a young guy and he's got a lot to learn, so, just let him play and don't let him get too down about having Continue to Article

As many of his teammates dressed quickly with another game just 14 hours away, Cleveland's star shortstop worked the room, exchanging high-fives with anyone he could find. Following a familiar script of scoring first, playing strong defense and riding dominant pitching, the Indians extended their winning streak to 20 and matched the AL mark held by the 2002 Oakland Athletics, beating the Detroit Tigers 2-0 on Tuesday night. Here are the scores. Here are the highlights: Dodgers 5, Giants 3: The streak is over. Clayton Kershaw allowed two runs — one earned — and pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth to get the win and stop the bleeding. Kenley Jansen got a four-out save but it was shaky, with him giving up three straight singles with one out in the ninth to face a bases-loaded jam of his own, though he struck his way out of it. Chase Utley homered and Yasiel Puig doubled in two to give the Dodgers their winning margin. The win ensured the Dodgers of at least a playoff spot in the National League. Indians 2, Tigers 0: Wrote this up here, but it was pretty simple: Corey Kluber was dominant, tossing a complete Continue to Article
