The rearview mirror was a popular item, at least figuratively, for the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers on their day between playoff games Thursday. The Penguins, defending Stanley Cup champions, downplayed their 7-0 series-opening win in which they dominated in pretty much every area and vowed to concentrate on Game 2 on Friday night at PPG Paints Arena. The Flyers, conversely, were hoping to move past the painful loss and even the first-round series before it moves to Philadelphia. Continue to Article

Lost amid Sidney Crosby's latest attempt to win the NHL batting title and Evgeni Malkin's one-on-three brilliance during the Pittsburgh Penguins' clinical dismantling of the Philadelphia Flyers in Game 1 is this: The two-time defending Stanley Cup champions played pretty well in their own end, too. While it's easy to point to Matt Murray's 24 saves — including a fabulous diving stop on Philadelphia's Scott Laughton in the first period that preserved a one-goal lead and set the stage for the blowout to come — it's the little things the Penguins did that caught the attention of head coach Mike Sullivan. While the Penguins were lighting up the scoreboard, the Flyers were searching for answers. One of the questions they have to find answer for before Game 2 on Friday is a familiar one for anyone that has followed Flyers hockey for the better part of the past three decades: Just what in the heck are they going to do in goal? Sidney Crosby and the Penguins provided proof in Pittsburgh's 7-0 dismantling of the Philadelphia Flyers in the opening game of their first-round series Wednesday night. Crosby performed more stick wizardry on his way to his third postseason hat trick, Evgeni Malkin added a highlight-reel goal of his own and the Penguins overwhelmed their seemingly overmatched cross-state rivals to begin their quest for a third straight Stanley Cup with a blowout that seemed to indicate the grudge match could be a mismatch. Not that Pittsburgh's captain wanted to buy into any sort of message sending, even after the Penguins became only the fifth team in NHL history to win a series opener by at least seven goals. Many believed that the Flyers would give Brian Elliott the hook after he allowed three goals in the first period. It wasn’t until Sidney Crosby scored another baseball-style goal to make it 5-0 that Elliott finally was pulled/taken out of his misery. Continue to Article
