Cleveland catcher Yan Gomes hit a two-run, walk-off home run with one out in the ninth inning to give the Indians a 3-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals on the coldest day in franchise history at Progressive Field on Sunday. Yonder Alonso walked with one out in the ninth against Brandon Maurer (0-2) and Gomes hit the ninth pitch of his at-bat over the left-field fence for his second homer of the season. The temperature was 32 degrees at first pitch, the coldest start time at home in franchise history. Continue to Article

On a frigid afternoon at Target Field, relief pitchers had no trouble warming up. They simply abandoned the bullpens and found a more comfortable spot to get loose. It was a Twins-record low of 27 degrees at gametime Saturday as the Seattle Mariners beat Minnesota 11-4. Because of the below-freezing chill, relievers moved out of the shaded bullpens in left-center field. Instead, they got ready in the indoor batting cages near the clubhouses. When summoned, they ran to the mound from the dugout. "The bullpens were probably 15-20 degrees colder. There's no sun down there," Mariners manager Scott Servais said. "MLB worked with us on that, as did the Twins. It was the right thing to do." Both teams Continue to Article

Michael Brantley made an immediate impact in his return from offseason ankle surgery with a pair of RBIs to lift the Cleveland Indians to a 3-2 win in their home opener against the Kansas City Royals on Friday afternoon. Brantley, who missed the Indians' first six games after undergoing surgery to stabilize ligaments in his right ankle last October, went 1-for-4 with a strikeout. Jose Ramirez also drove in a run as Cleveland snapped its two-game skid. Continue to Article

Aaron Boone's managerial debut was considerably smoother than the first game run by his father Bob, who pulled Kevin Appier with a no-hitter after 6 2/3 innings and 98 pitches in the Kansas City Royals' 1995 opener. Appier had just struck out Baltimore's Cal Ripken Jr. when Boone signaled for reliever Rusty Meacham. Aaron Boone won his first two games as the New York Yankees manager, then watched relievers Dellin Betances and David Robertson implode the following two days at Toronto as the Blue Jays rallied for a four-game split.
