Pitcher Miles Mikolas hit a home run and got the win in his return from a three-year stint in Japan, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat Milwaukee 8-4 on Monday to spoil the Brewers' home opener. Paul DeJong connected for the second straight game, hitting his third homer this season to boost the Cardinals. The Brewers had opened the season with a three-game sweep at San Diego. Mikolas (1-0) gave up a two-run homer to Eric Thames and solo shots to Lorenzo Cain and Manny Pina. But the 29-year-old righty benefited from the Cardinals' own outburst at hitter-friendly Miller Park. Mikolas (1-0) got in on the fun in the fifth with his first major league hit — a two-run homer off Zach Davies (0-1) that Continue to Article

In the hour after first pitch on Opening Day, I talked with 25 fans that I had never met before Thursday. I kept count. Among them, every single person expressed excitement and hope for the Mets in 2018. Similarly, they were all happy knowing Mickey Callaway was in the dugout. The last time I recall encountering this level optimism was 2016, six months after the Mets made a surprising and entertaining run through the National League playoffs and World Series. "I know it's a lot of the same players, Continue to Article

Ji-Man Choi says being with the Milwaukee Brewers reminds him of a fun day at an amusement park. The Brewers enjoyed a wild ride on opening day, beating the San Diego Padres 2-1 in 12 innings on Thursday. Reliever Jeremy Jeffress emphatically pumped his fists several times after getting Chase Headley to hit into a bases-loaded double play in the 11th, and then Orlando Arcia singled in Choi with two outs in the 12th inning. DMX was sentenced on Wednesday to one year in prison and three years of supervised release for tax evasion after trying to avoid paying $1.7 million in federal taxes by concealing royalties and other income, according to TMZ. X was initially charged by prosecutors with the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York with 14 counts and a possible 44 years behind bars. In November, DMX struck a guilty plea to one count of tax evasion that came with a much lighter maximum sentence of five years in jail. Continue to Article

The Brewers have released pitcher Yovani Gallardo, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. The Brewers will be on the hook for $500,000 of his $2 million non-guaranteed salary. Gallardo, 32, served up 10 runs (seven earned) on 12 hits and eight walks with 12 strikeouts in 13 1/3 innings this spring. Continue to Article
