Mets 1B Dominic Smith is traveling to Las Vegas on Sunday to join the Triple-A team, the team announced. Smith is on the 10-day DL to open the season as he works his way back from a strained right quad injury he suffered early in spring training. Smith was penciled into the starting lineup for the Mets' first spring training game of the season, but was benched due to tardiness and subsequently suffered the quad injury that sidelined him for most of the spring. He was limited to just one game in spring training this year. Veteran 1B Adrian Gonzalez has picked up three hits and an RBI in the first two games for the Mets this season. Smith hit .198 with nine home runs and 26 RBIs in 49 major league Continue to Article

NY Mets
In the hour after first pitch on Opening Day, I talked with 25 fans that I had never met before Thursday. I kept count. Among them, every single person expressed excitement and hope for the Mets in 2018. Similarly, they were all happy knowing Mickey Callaway was in the dugout. The last time I recall encountering this level optimism was 2016, six months after the Mets made a surprising and entertaining run through the National League playoffs and World Series. This year, though, six months after watching the team lose 92 games, fire their manager and return with mostly the same roster, I was surprised -- but happy -- to hear optimism from 25 out of 25 fans. "I know it's a lot of the same players, Continue to Article

Asdrubal Cabrera may have found his new favorite spot in the Mets' lineup. After going hitless in the cleanup hole on Opening Day, manager Mickey Callaway decided to put his veteran second baseman in the leadoff spot on Saturday. The move worked out for the best.  Cabrera went 3-for-5 with two doubles, an RBI, and one run scored in the Mets' 6-2 win over the Cardinals. Not only did he secure his first hits of the 2018 campaign, but he looked comfortable at the plate, taking pitches and allowing the rest of the lineup to study starter Michael Wacha.  "I'm feeling pretty good at the plate," Cabrera said. "I just try to come to the park and try hard to help the team no matter where [I am in the Continue to Article

The Mets look to keep their hot start going with another contest against the Cardinals at Citi Field on Sunday at 1:10 p.m. Who is starting today for the Mets? LHP Steven Matz, who posted a 6.08 ERA and 1.53 WHIP in 2017. Matz didn't have the best of springs with 14 allowed runs on 21 hits over 20 innings of work. However, that could all change with a solid start in his first outing of the regular season. Who is starting today for the Cardinals?  RHP Luke Weaver, who owned a 3.88 ERA and 1.26 WHIP over 13 games with the Cardinals last season. He had a stellar spring campaign this year, with a 0.55 ERA over 16.1 innings pitched.  Travis d'Arnaud became the first Met to hit a homer in 2018 with Continue to Article

After scoring nine runs on Opening Day without the benefit of a home run, Travis d'Arnaud and Yoenis Cespedes both went yard as the Mets topped the Cardinals, 6-2, on Saturday afternoon at Cit Field. Here are three takeaways from the game... DeGrom excelled despite not having his best stuff Jacob deGrom allowed one run on four hits while walking one and striking out seven in 5.2 innings. DeGrom looked pretty sharp in the first inning, but it was clear he didn't have his best stuff -- which Travis d'Arnaud and Mickey Callaway both alluded to after the game. However, as he usually does, deGrom -- who said the cold weather negatively impacted his ability to grip the baseball -- battled through it Continue to Article
