It has not been pretty for the Vancouver Canucks. It is obviously something of a fluke if a team goes 212:09 without scoring a single goal. A 3-0 loss in Anaheim, the team’s fifth straight L and third straight game without scoring a single sad solitary goal, eliminated the Canucks from playoff contention for the third consecutive season, and fourth in the last five years. To some extent, the Arizona Coyotes should take wins when they can get them. Last night provided almost too-perfect an example, as the Vancouver Canucks and Coyotes squared off in something of a Tank Bowl. It came down to the dying seconds with an exasperated Daniel Sedin unable to beat Darcy Kuemper, who recorded his first shutout with Arizona as the Coyotes won 1-0. Continue to Article

On a road trip where Washington struggled to generate any offense, Nicklas Backstrom's goal was enough to send the Capitals home on a good note. Philipp Grubauer made 24 saves for his fifth career shutout and Backstrom broke a scoreless tie late in the second period to help the Capitals salvage the final game of their California swing with a 2-0 victory over the San Jose Sharks on Saturday. Washington was outscored 7-1 in losses to Anaheim and Los Angeles to open the trip before a narrow win in San Jose moved the Capitals one point ahead of Pittsburgh for first place in the Metropolitan Division, pending the Penguins' game in Toronto later. Nicklas Backstrom scored late in the second period, and Lars Eller added another goal late in the third while goalie Philipp Grubauer made 24 saves as the Washington Capitals defeated the San Jose Sharks 2-0 on Saturday in San Jose. This ended a three-game Western swing where Washington simply could not find a lot of offense. The Capitals fell at Anaheim on Tuesday (4-0) and then lost to the Kings (3-1) on Thursday night. Mikkel Boedker snapped the San Jose Sharks' 0-for-29 power play drought with a goal at 12:12 of the third period Thursday night, snapping a scoreless tie in a 2-0 win over the reeling St. Louis Blues at SAP Center in San Jose, Calif. Boedker took a pass from Joonas Donskoi in the slot and snapped a wrister off the left post and into the net for his 13th goal, enabling San Jose to pass Anaheim for second place in the Pacific Division with 81 points. Tomas Hertl iced the outcome with an empty-netter with 15 seconds to play, his 16th goal of the season. Continue to Article
