It’s not a secret in college basketball circles that the fit between the Memphis basketball program and Tubby Smith has not been great, and it is also not a secret that there are a lot of people in that city and around that program that would love to see their native son, Penny Hardaway, get the job. Penny is from Memphis. Smith would be owed $9.75 million if he was fired this year, and that is a lot of buyout money for a program that isn’t exactly swimming in cash, but given the money the program is losing from season ticket sales and a leasing deal they have with the Memphis Grizzlies, who own the FedEx Forum, the money that could be brought into the program with a coach that revives interest from the fanbase could offset some or most of that buyout. Even without scoring a point, rookie Jonathan Isaac had his Orlando Magic teammates talking about his impact on Saturday night's win over the Memphis Grizzlies. Evan Fournier broke a tie on a long 3-pointer with 22.5 seconds left, and Isaac helped preserve Orlando's lead with his third blocked shot in a 107-100 victory that stretched the Memphis Grizzlies' losing streak to 13 games. 17-year-old Joaquin Oliver was one of the 17 victims of the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting on Feb 14 and was buried in a Miami Heat Dwyane Wade Jersey, his parents reportedly announced on Univision. On Saturday, the Heat played their first home game since the shooting and paid a moment of silence and tribute video for the victims before playing the Memphis Grizzlies. Prominent NBA agent Dan Fegan died Sunday in a car accident near Aspen, Colo. Fegan, 56, was driving an SUV that was struck by a bus while trying to cross or merge onto Highway 82, Colorado State Trooper Gabe Easton told the Aspen Times. Two passengers riding with Fegan, his 5-year-old son and a 29-year-old California woman, sustained serious injuries and were airlifted to a hospital in Denver, Easton told the newspaper. The playoff picture in the Western Conference became much more opaque after Minnesota Timberwolves guard Jimmy Butler went down with a knee injury earlier in the week. Reports out of Minnesota was that Butler had suffered a right meniscus injury, ducking what many had feared was an ACL tear.
