Blake Wheeler scored a hat trick in less than five minutes of the first period and the Winnipeg Jets broke out to a five-goal lead in the first 20 minutes to hand the Pittsburgh Penguins a 7-1 defeat Sunday. Matt Murray's night ended just 18:07 into the game after he allowed four goals on nine shots, the last straw being a weak wrist shot from Joel Armia that slid its way through traffic and between Murray's legs. A blowout win over the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions was more important to Blake Wheeler than his own outstanding performance. Wheeler scored three of Winnipeg's five first-period goals and added an assist in the third as the Jets routed the Pittsburgh Penguins 7-1 on Sunday night. Sunday night’s brutal 7-1 loss to the Winnipeg Jets attached a flashing, over-sized arrow to a trend for the Pittsburgh Penguins so far this season: they’ve been awful closing out back-to-back sets. As defending champions, the Penguins have accrued more mileage than any other NHL team over the last two seasons. The Penguins are still hanging in there with a 7-5-1 record, yet there are troubling signs from shoddy backup goaltending, a goal differential that’s now fallen to -14, and these often-lousy efforts in the second game of back-to-back sets. You know how Mario Lemieux scored his first NHL goal during his first NHL shift in his first game? Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Casey DeSmith essentially experienced a reverse-Lemieux on Sunday night.
