After missing his team’s 6-1 loss to the Ottawa Senators on Saturday night, the Edmonton Oilers announced on Monday that forward Leon Draisaitl has been placed on injure reserve. Draisaitl signed an eight-year, $68 million contract over the summer making him a significant part of the Oilers’ core alongside Connor McDavid. The Minnesota Wild were mere seconds way from a loss on Saturday night. Thanks to Mikko Koivu, however, the Wild were able to come away with points after scoring a goal with 0.2 seconds to play in regulation. With the goaltender pulled against the Carolina Hurricanes in the final moments of regulation, Koivu was able to bang home a rebound past a diving Scott Darling in net. The play was called a goal on the ice thanks to the eagle eyes of the official behind the net. The referees in the game did take a look at the goal after the fact to see if Darling was interfered with in his crease. The NHL’s had some wonderful superstars over the years, and it’s not necessarily time for Sidney Crosby to totally pass the torch to Connor McDavid just yet. McDavid’s sensational performance in the Edmonton Oilers’ season-opener (replete with a historic hat trick) brought a different thought to mind: McDavid’s combination of speed and skill open the door for him to be a truly mainstream star. Bryan Bickell is going to finish his NHL career where it all began. The veteran forward signed a one-day contract so that he can retire with the Chicago Blackhawks. “As any professional athlete will tell you, stepping away from the game is extremely difficult especially given my circumstances,” Bickell said in a release.
