Chicago Cubs
Standing just a few feet away from a room full of baseball writers at Gaylord National Resort in Nashville last December, Rich Hill got emotional. The now-37-year-old lefty reflected on a star-crossed career, one that had seen him harness his electric curveball into an excellent 2007 season with the Cubs, only to nearly fall off the baseball map. From 2008 through 2015, Hill made only 22 starts, including none from 2010-2014, as he battled a litany of injuries, settled mostly for relief work when he could crack a big league roster, and journeyed so far he even pitched in indie ball for a short time as part of his long road back. The St. Louis Cardinals are running out of time to make their September surge extend their season beyond the first day of October. Seung Hwan Oh's difficult season hit another low point when he surrendered a go-ahead two-run homer to Pittsburgh's Starling Marte in the fifth inning on Sunday as the Pirates pulled away for a 4-1 victory to blunt the Cardinals' momentum heading into the regular season's final week. Jose Quintana was acquired by the Chicago Cubs for big games, and he came through big against the Brewers. Quintana pitched a three-hitter for his second big league shutout, and the Cubs beat Milwaukee 5-0 on Sunday to close in on a second straight NL Central title and damage the Brewers' playoff hopes. Coming off its first World Series title since 1908, Chicago (87-68) won three of four in the weekend series and opened a 5 1/2-game lead over the second-place Brewers (82-73) with seven games remaining. Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon moved to clarify himself after comments made about outspoken and under-fire United States president Donald Trump. Maddon received criticism for his remark about "respecting the White House" after Trump controversially condemned NFL players for kneeling during the national anthem, while he publicly withdrew the Golden State Warriors' invitation to visit the American capital. After Saturday's MLB loss to the Milwaukee Brewers, a reporter asked Maddon for his thoughts about the controversy involving Trump, but the Cubs boss revealed on Sunday that he did not know what the 71-year-old had said on Twitter.
