Cubs executives bet on Jon Lester because they had so much inside information from their time together with the Boston Red Sox and believed he would age gracefully with his fluid left-handed delivery, imposing physical presence and competitive personality. The Cubs also went into it with their eyes wide open, knowing the history of nine-figure contracts for pitchers and how those megadeals usually lead to a crash. “I think it’s way too early to talk about that,” general manager Jed Hoyer said Thursday at Miller Park, where Lester’s mysterious struggles overshadowed the beginning of a four-game showdown against the Milwaukee Brewers that could decide the National League Central race. The pressure is on Major League Baseball teams to add more protective netting to their stadiums after the scary scene Wednesday at Yankee Stadium where a young girl was hit by a foul line drive and apparently knocked out. The little girl was OK, according to an update that came Wednesday night after she’d been to the hospital, but it still added a new layer to a debate that’s been going for a few years: Do MLB stadiums need more netting to protect fans? A young girl is carried out of Yankee Stadium after getting hit by a foul ball Wednesday. Continue to Article

BOSTON Red Sox chairman Tom Werner doesnt seem to be the biggest fan of the the Yankees, MLB disciplinarian Joe Torre, and players who cant take criticism from broadcasters. In a spot Thursday with WEEI, Werner made clear David Prices handling of Dennis Eckersley was unprofessional. Boston is a tough place to play, Werner said on WEEIs Ordway, Merlonia and Fauria.
