The Cubs played their first ever Friday home game on Sept. 8, 2017, but don’t count on that becoming the norm. The Chicago Cubs cleared their biggest hurdle last season, finally winning their first World Series since 1908. The most recent came last week when the City Council allowed the Cubs to move Friday’s game against the Brewers from 1:20 p.m. to 7:05 p.m., thus making it the first regular season Friday night game in Wrigley Field history. The city has indicated it will be a one-time only exception to accommodate the Cubs rough travel schedule, but that’s not likely to stop the team from asking for more. Heres a wild split: Against teams not based in Milwaukee, Mike Montgomery has a 2.80 ERA and 2:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 2017. Against the Milwaukee Brewers, Montgomery has a 10.13 ERA and 1:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. For whatever reason, Montgomery has struggled mightily against the Brewers this year. Continue to Article

The Milwaukee Brewers will leave Chicago with at least a series victory following Saturdays 15-2 drubbing of the Cubs, but that success will have come at a cost. Ace right-hander Jimmy Nelson will miss the remainder of the 2017 season after suffering a right rotator cuff strain and partial anterior labrum tear while diving back into first base during Milwaukees 2-0 win Friday night. The 28-year-old has, statistically, been far and away the Brewers best player this year, totaling 4.9 WAR thanks to a 3.49 ERA and 3.03 FIP compiled over 29 starts (the Brewers next best player is third baseman Travis Shaw, who has 3 WAR). A similar level of creativity may be necessary to get Addison Russell back if hes going to be a factor in October, so long as the Cubs can hold off the Milwaukee Brewers and St. Louis Cardinals. Russell, whos slashing .241/.305/.417 with 10 home runsin 97 games, landed on the disabled list in early August with plantar fasciitis, and re-aggravated that injury during a rehab assignment in early September.
